US Senate Passes Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act of 2024

On December 5, 2024, the US Senate passed the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) Act of 2024 in a bipartisan vote.  GLRI was established by Congress  in 2010 to allow the EPA to collaborate with other agencies to fund projects to restore and protect the Great Lakes.  Over the past decade, GLRI has improved the quality of Great Lakes ecosystems through projects to clean up toxic pollution sites near major urban areas, reduce agriculture runoff pollution threatening drinking water supplies, restore habitat for plants and animal species, and prevent the spread of harmful invasive species.  The bill now heads to the House of Representatives, where supporters hope it will pass before the end of the session.
