MiCorps Volunteer Lake Monitor Training

Michigan residents can sign up for volunteer lake monitor training through the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps). MiCorps, a statewide network focused on water quality, has been running its Cooperative Lakes Monitoring Program for 51 years, with support from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

Training sessions will be held in-person in Muskegon on April 25-26, and virtually on April 30. Participants will learn about the program’s history, data collection protocols, and receive necessary equipment. These sessions are free to all participants, and anyone curious about lake health is encouraged to volunteer.

Once trained, volunteers monitor water quality, invasive species, and ecosystem health in lakes across Michigan. The data they gather contributes to a public database used by researchers, fisheries, and resource managers statewide. Jo Latimore, director of MiCorps, emphasizes that the volunteer work is increasingly vital, especially as government agencies face challenges in data collection.
