Governor Whitmer’s Budget Proposal Prioritizes Michigan’s Environment

Governor Whitmer’s proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget focuses on enhancing Michigan’s water, energy, and environmental infrastructure, alongside improving government transparency. Key highlights of the budget include:
- Clean Water and Infrastructure: $50 million for lead service line replacement, $30 million for water infrastructure grants, and $5.95 million for drinking water safety programs to improve water quality and reduce lead exposure.
- Contamination Cleanup and Prevention: $80 million in solid waste surcharge funds to promote recycling, and $22.6 million for brownfield redevelopment and cleaning up contaminated sites, including the Detroit River Area. $7 million to support the implementation of a statewide septic code to reduce sewage and E. coli in our waterways.
- Energy Infrastructure: $129.1 million in federal grants for renewable energy projects and $10.3 million to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
- Government Transparency: $39 million to digitize records and improve state government transparency, saving taxpayers money.
