Paint Creek Habitat Restoration
July 29 @ 9:00 am - August 5 @ 5:00 pm
Free
Starting July 29th, we will be installing 56 log structures on the Phase 4 section of Paint Creek and 27 additional structures on Phase 3. Volunteers should bring gloves and waders (optional, can wet-wade).
Each day we will be meeting at the Paint Creek Trail parking lot on Tienken Rd at 9:30am.
Address: 1075 Paint Creek Ln, Rochester Hills, MI 48306
- Daily work involves:
- Towing a canoe with tools (small generator, sledge hammers, saws, steel rods, etc.)
- Drilling holes through the logs for the steel rods
- Hold logs in place while steel spikes are driven into the creek bed to hold them in place
- Pull 10 – 20 foot logs from the woods
- Pound 4 foot steel rods with a sledge hammer
- Collect in-stream rocks to place along / behind the logs once they are anchored
- Last time we let the volunteers decide where and how to place the final logs in the creek.
For convenience, we have divided the work days up into two 4-hour time slots for each day. You may register for as many or as few as you wish. This would be an ideal opportunity to use any employer-provided volunteer PTO days – or for any students*, a great way to log volunteer hours!
*Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and be able to wade safely and move heavy objects (rocks, logs, equipment) to participate.
Thank you for supporting our effort to restore and preserve Paint Creek, and we hope to see you there!
