2025 Cedar River Stream Sampling

May 17 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Little Forks began monitoring the water quality of the Cedar River starting in 2015, and with the help of volunteers, we’ve captured 10 years of water quality data in the Cedar River Watershed through sampling for macroinvertebrates. With an increase in restoration projects and land protection along the watershed, we have documented positive changes in the quality of the river.

Event Agenda and Information:

We will meet at Gladwin Conservation District Community Garden pavilion on SaturdayMay 17th at 10am to review the protocol for the day and divide into teams. We will sample six sites along the Cedar River in both Gladwin and Clare counties to collect macroinvertebrates, insects and animals without a backbone that can be seen with the naked eye. After collection, we will reconvene at the pavilion for lunch, provided by Little Forks Conservancy.

Using the specimens found in the river, we can determine the quality of the water. This is done on ID Night where volunteers can help identify the collected specimens. ID Night will take place on Monday, May 19th from 5:30-7pm at the Little Forks office in Midland (125 McDonald St, 2nd floor). If you would like to join us for ID Night, please send and email to lkelsey@littleforks.org
