Join us for Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council’s Volunteer Stream Monitoring Spring Training! \nThis training will teach you how to monitor stream health and collect macroinvertebrates — tiny aquatic insects that help us measure water quality. We’ll begin with a brief indoor presentation at our office\, enjoy a pizza lunch\, and then head to the Bear River for hands-on field training. \nNo previous experience necessary — we’ll provide all the training\, equipment\, and support you need to get started! \nWho Should Attend:\nAnyone interested in freshwater protection! DESCRIPTION:Empowering Educators for Watershed Stewardship\nTip of the Mitt Watershed Council (TOMWC) invites teachers of upper elementary to high school students (grades 3-12) to participate in a two-day Watershed Educator Training workshop on February 27 and 28\, 2025. This workshop is designed for educators in the Watershed Council’s service area\, with preference given to teachers from the Alanson\, Cheboygan\, Inland Lakes\, Onaway\, Pellston\, Vanderbilt\, and Wolverine school districts in Northern Michigan. \nThis workshop is limited to 12 educators. Please register early to secure your spot. \nWorkshop Details: \n\nDates: Thursday\, February 27 and Friday\, February 28\, 2025\nTime: 9 AM – 2 PM (Lunch provided)\nLocation: Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council 426 Bay Street\, Downtown Petoskey\nCost: Free\nTeacher Stipend: $250 will be provided to each participating teacher\nGrant Funding: Participants can apply for additional grants ranging from $500-$1\,000 to purchase materials for implementing watershed education in their classrooms.\n\nProgram Overview:\nThis workshop will prepare educators to teach place-based watershed education using curriculum-aligned instructional tools and strategies. Training will address watershed-specific topics such as stormwater impacts\, agricultural practices\, and shoreline management. Participants will connect with a network of STEM educators and environmental professionals for ongoing support.
