DESCRIPTION:Freshwater Science: Advancing Stormwater Management at Great Lakes Marinas with Green Infrastructure \nStormwater runoff carries pollution from land into nearby bodies of water\, a phenomenon made worse by more frequent and severe storms due to climate change. Meanwhile\, marinas on the Great Lakes can release pollutants — oil\, grease\, antifreeze\, and boat paint — and exacerbate runoff with impervious parking lots and rooftops. This puts marinas in a unique position to become a part of the solution. \nDr. Scott Hardy\, Ohio Sea Grant extension educator\, and Sarah Orlando\, Clean Marinas program manager\, worked as part of a collaboration between the Michigan\, Ohio\, and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs to improve stormwater management at Great Lakes marinas by implementing green infrastructure. SUMMARY:MAKING LAKE LIFE GREAT - CAPITOL CONNECTION WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:‘s summer relaxation time! For many of us\, that means a trip to one of Michigan’s 11\,000 inland lakes. St. Clair\, Torch\, Gull\, Silver\, Reeds—the list goes on. \nUnfortunately\, an influx of human habitation and recreation during the summer season can cause problems for lakes. So\, too\, can yearlong residences and businesses. Pollution from septic systems and lawn chemicals can lower water quality needed for healthy ecosystems. Invasive species can threaten native flora and fauna. And reckless boat wakes can disrupt habitats. \nFortunately\, there are actions individuals\, lake association members\, and government leaders can take in concert together. DESCRIPTION:Each year\, Michigan proclaims this week as an opportunity to raise awareness of the Great Lakes and Michigan’s inland lakes\, rivers\, streams and groundwater. It’s a time to trumpet the importance of these water bodies and their immeasurable value to quality of life throughout the state. Michigan is known around the world for this unique resource\, which people can help preserve in the face of climate change and other challenges. \nBy raising awareness\, we will inspire people to protect and be champions of the Great Lakes and fresh water. Our call to action is for residents around the state to enjoy\, appreciate\, and safeguard this vital resource for current and future generations. \nWill you paddle along a water trail or join an Adopt-a-Beach team for a local cleanup? Maybe you can collect plastics as you stroll along the shore\, or clear litter from storm catch basins in your neighborhood.
