SUMMARY:Lake Leelanau Shoreline Stewards Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Lake Leelanau Shoreline Stewards Webinar: Restoring Shorelines and Removing Terrestrial Invasive Species will highlight The Lake Leelanau Lake Association’s (LLLA) programs and strategies to improve Lake Leelanau’s shoreline and combat terrestrial invasive species\, including community engagement techniques\, promotions\, and educational strategies. \nLLLA began a Shoreline Stewards Program in 2022 to grow its community of people who know and care about protecting the lake from the shoreline. Using state and local resources\, LLLA has created its own training program to certify its “Shoreline Ambassadors”. Upon completion of the training program\, the Shoreline Ambassadors perform Shoreline Consultations for Lake Leelanau riparians at their homes. These consultations often educate on shoreline erosion prevention\, reducing stormwater runoff\, native plant recommendations\, combating terrestrial invasive species\, and other ways to naturalize the shoreline. \nLLLA had terrestrial invasive species (TIS) surveys completed for yellow flag iris\, phragmites\, and purple loosestrife on Lake Leelanau’s shoreline. Dr. Jared Homola of the USGS Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit will discuss a project in collaboration with Michigan State University and the Michigan DNR using cutting-edge genetic tools to identify the biological and environmental factors that could lead to the crayfish’s spread. DESCRIPTION:Freshwater Science: Advancing Stormwater Management at Great Lakes Marinas with Green Infrastructure \nStormwater runoff carries pollution from land into nearby bodies of water\, a phenomenon made worse by more frequent and severe storms due to climate change. Meanwhile\, marinas on the Great Lakes can release pollutants — oil\, grease\, antifreeze\, and boat paint — and exacerbate runoff with impervious parking lots and rooftops. This puts marinas in a unique position to become a part of the solution. \nDr. Scott Hardy\, Ohio Sea Grant extension educator\, and Sarah Orlando\, Clean Marinas program manager\, worked as part of a collaboration between the Michigan\, Ohio\, and Wisconsin Sea Grant programs to improve stormwater management at Great Lakes marinas by implementing green infrastructure. In a similar fashion\, hydrilla – said to be the most invasive aquatic plant in the world – can grow new plants from stem fragments\, making it a formidable challenge to control. That challenge now faces Michigan\, where hydrilla was recently detected for the first time. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Lakes Online is designed for interested individuals\, decision-makers\, local leaders\, resource professionals\, and lakefront property owners interested in gaining knowledge about inland lakes and connecting with others who have a similar interest. In this introductory online course\, participants will learn about lake ecology\, management\, and protection through six interactive units. \nParticipants increase their knowledge and understanding of the following six topics: \n\nLake ecology\nWatersheds\nShorelines\nAquatic plant management\nMichigan water law\nCommunity involvement\n\nThese topics are divided into six units which include closed-captioned video lectures\, interactive activities\, discussion forums\, quizzes\, and additional resources.  The units take approximately 2 hours to complete. The course is taught on a week-by-week basis\, allowing for online communication between classmates and instructors through topical discussion forums. \nPrice\nRegister by January 12\, 2024\, for an early bird rate of $95.00.
