SUMMARY:Karing for the Kzoo 2026
DESCRIPTION:KARING FOR THE KZOO 2026 \nMark your calendars and join us for this very early spring 2026 Kalamazoo Mayor’s Riverfront and Verburg Parks beautification and Kalamazoo Valley River Trail cleanup. This marks our fifth consecutive\, twice-yearly\, community-wide event dedicated to improving the City of Kalamazoo’s riverfront parks and adjacent river trail experience. \nThere are two (2) distinct components to this event: \n1. Mayors’ Riverfront and Verburg Parks Beautification: 10 AM – 3 PM \nThis is where\, under the guidance of invasive plant specialists\, we will continue our efforts to eradicate invasive trees and bushes that are choking out native species and pushing out small birds\, animals\, and pollinators. We will also be trimming back any overhanging branches and clearing the trail of any loose leaves and other natural debris to improve the Kalamazoo Valley River Trail user experience. \n2. Litter and Trash Pick Up: 10 AM – 1 PM \nThis event’s litter and trash pickup will be on and along the Kalamazoo Valley River Trail. Our primary areas of focus will be the KVRT from Mayors’ Riverfront to Verburg Parks\, and then those stretches from Mayors’ to Comstock and Verburg Park to Parchment. \nBecause of early season cold water temperatures and swift-flowing waters\, any on-river activities will be reserved for only those expert paddlers or those with power boats. We’ll return on another date to canvas the Kalamazoo River to complete our stewardship along this stretch. \nThere are a number of ways in which you can support: \n\nAre you or your organization invasive plant specialists? Help us and be a team lead.\nAre you comfortable and able to help treat and clear invasive trees and bushes? We need your help to complete this transformative parks improvement.\nHelp pick up litter and trash along as much as 4.5 miles of the KVRT.\nTell your friends\, family\, and coworkers\, and make it a team event.\nBe an event partner and sponsor; give financially or in-kind.\n\nEverything needed will be provided for this event\, including equipment\, food\, and hospitality. Also\, Kalamazoo Growlers will be providing food and snacks at their ballpark\, and every volunteer will receive a FREE pass to a Growlers’ home game on a date to be announced soon. \nWe are pleased to share that this event is being generously supported by Western Michigan University students and\, in particular\, their Greek community\, championed by Sigma Chi\, Kappa Sigma\, and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternities. The WMU Greek community was instrumental in our spring 2025 parks beautification efforts and fall 2025 Kalamazoo parks\, river\, and river trail cleanup. \nTo learn more\, visit https://www.miwaterwaysstewards.org/karing-for-the-kzoo26—spring.html.

SUMMARY:Kalamazoo Parks Beautification 2025
DESCRIPTION:This spring we are launching the beginning of our Kalamazoo Riverside Parks Beautification Project. This is a build from last year’s Kalamazoo River and River Valley Trail Cleanup events where hundreds of volunteers cleared thousands of pounds of litter\, trash\, and other unwanted debris\, from our Kalamazoo River and adjoining greenways. \nOur focus will be making improvements to our flagship Mayors’ Riverfront and Verburg parks. Work will include the clearing of litter and trash\, eradicating invasive trees and bushes\, creating generous river overlooks\, and plating of native trees\, bushes\, and grasses to beautify the landscape. \nThis riverside parks beautification project is a collaboration between Michigan Waterways Stewards\, Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation\, and Barry\, Calhoun\, Kalamazoo Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area. This high-impact\, community-wide\, volunteer resourced event\, will change the landscape of Mayors’ Riverfront and Verburg Parks. \nIt includes two 2025 seasonal projects. The work will result in the greater integration of the Kalamazoo Valley River Trail with the Kalamazoo River. We will be creating improved sight lines\, river overlooks\, and improve biodiversity via the planting of native trees\, bushes\, and grasses. The later will create a more resilient landscape and restore the food web to attract and maintain wildlife and essential pollinators such as bees\, butterflies\, and beetles. \nThe first event is slated for this spring\, the weekend of April 12 and 13. Another this fall\, on a date not yet determined\, which will include reforestation in the form of an Adopt A Tree program. \nSPRING 2025 – APRIL 12 & 13 10AM – 3PM\n•  Eradicate invasive trees\, bushes and other unwanted flora. Those identified include: Buckthorn\, Tree of Heaven… Privet\, Honeysuckle\, and Autumn Olive\n•  Create generous sight lines to integrate the Kalamazoo River with Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.\n•  Create Kalamazoo River overlooks to improve the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail experience. \nFill out the form on the event page to register to volunteer or to become an event sponsor.
