SUMMARY:Invasive Plant Patrol - Nelson Woods
DESCRIPTION:Little Forks Conservancy is looking for volunteers to help improve the environment for native species at our Nelson Woods property. This is our newest acquisition that we are currently developing into a nature preserve for the public to enjoy! You can be part of the effort to improve and protect this soon-to-be preserve by joining the Invasive Plant Patrol on August 6th!  Register HERE. \nWhat we’ll be doing: Invasive species are those that are non-native to local ecosystems and can be harmful to the environment. Autumn olive and buckthorn are invasive shrubs that can quickly colonize and outcompete native plants. Volunteers will help restore the native habitat of Nelson Woods by manually removing these shrubs. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up. Those under 15 must have a parent present or a chaperone. \nWhat to bring: Gloves\, water\, safety glasses\, and loppers or handsaws if available . We will be working outside in the woods and among shrubs\, tall grasses and brush\, so please dress accordingly for the event and weather. Closed toed shoes are required. We will also provide extra hand saws\, loppers and gloves for volunteers to use if needed. \nLocation and time: Nelson Woods\, our newest land acquisition set to become a preserve!  (Closest address is Solomon Road\, Midland MI 48640). The event will start at 6 PM on Tuesday\, August 6th. \nDirections: The preserve is located off Sandow Road\, which is off of M-20. Head north on Sandow Road until you get to Solomon Road. The preserve is on the corner of Solomon and Glen Road. Attendees can park on Solomon or Glen Road and a LFC staff member will be waiting at the trailhead to direct volunteers! \nPlease RSVP to receive updates. All events are subject to cancellation due to heavy rain or extreme heat. Please email any questions to Benjamin VanDyke at bvandyke@littleforks.org. \nWe appreciate your willingness to help us with our conservation and habitat efforts here in mid-Michigan and the Midland community!

SUMMARY:Cedar River Fall Stream Sampling - Gladwin City
DESCRIPTION:Cedar River Fall Stream Sampling October 8th 10 AM – 2 PM\nHelp us monitor the water quality in the Cedar River by collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates! We will meet at Gladwin City Park to collect macroinvertebrates. After we finish collecting macroinvertebrates from six different locations\, we will meet back at Gladwin City Park for lunch. \nLittle Forks began monitoring the water quality of the Cedar River back in 2015 and with an increase in restoration projects and land protection along the watershed\, we have documented positive changes in the quality of the river. \nWe will meet at Gladwin City Park at Pavilion 1 to review the protocol for the day and divide into teams. We will sample six sites along the Cedar River in both Gladwin and Clare counties to collect macroinvertebrates\, animals without a backbone that can be seen with the naked eye. After collection\, we will reconvene at the Pavilion for lunch! \nUsing the specimens found in the river\, we can determine the quality of the water. This is done on ID Nite where volunteers can help identify the collected specimens. ID Nite will take place on Monday\, October 10th from 5:30-7:30 pm at the Little Forks office in Midland (125 McDonald St\, 2nd floor). \nRegister at Event Website

SUMMARY:Cedar River Stream Monitoring—Leader & Collector Training - Gladwin City
DESCRIPTION:Get certified to lead volunteers or collect macroinvertebrates for the Stream Monitoring Program on the Cedar River! \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nAttend this training to become a group leader or macroinvertebrate collector for our biannual samplings of the Cedar River. \nAs a leader you will coordinate a group of volunteers\, making sure they get to their sampling site. The training will take place outside and include a field portion at Gladwin City-North Park Boat Launch\, which will involve getting into the river. \nIf the event is cancelled due to weather\, then it will be rescheduled for August 30th at 6pm. \nContact us at info@littleforks.org or call our office at 989-835-4886 with any questions.
