SUMMARY:Chemistry and Flow Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Join our monitoring team this 2026 season. The monitoring season runs from April through September with outings in Washtenaw\, Wayne\, and a limited number in Livingston County. New volunteers are required to attend one of the 2-hour in-person orientations in March. Please register following the links below. \n\nWashtenaw County Orientation: Saturday\, March 14th 9am – 11am at HRWC\nWayne County Orientation: Saturday\, March 21st 9am – 11am at Lake Erie Metropark\n\nVolunteers who previously participated in the program in 2025 are not required to attend an in-person orientation and can sign up here. \nContact Kelly McCabe at kmccabe@hrwc.org if you have questions or for additional information. \nHelp us monitor our region’s waters!\nEnjoy being outdoors and want to help monitor the water quality of local rivers and creeks! Learn how to collect water samples\, measure stream flow\, and use hand-held chemistry sensors. No prior experience needed. \nEach year we offer a program orientation in March followed by in-field training in April for all interested participants. Trained volunteers are then expected to commit to at least 4 sampling trips during the growing season (April through September) to designated monitoring sites in Livingston\, Washtenaw\, or Wayne counties. During each 2 – 4 hour sampling trip\, volunteer teams work together to collect valuable chemistry and flow data that supports HRWC’s and our municipal partners’ work to protect and restore the Huron River and Downriver waterways. \n \nEXPLORE OUR DATA\nThanks to participants in this program\, HRWC has more than 20 years of Chemistry and Flow monitoring data. Explore this publicly available dataset following the links below and check out this blog for a summary of recent findings. For more information about the data\, find annual monitoring reports on our Chemistry and Flow Monitoring Program webpage or contact Kelly McCabe.

SUMMARY:2026 Winter Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:These underwater creatures elude most predators by growing during the winter months when most fish are more sluggish. They live only in good quality streams so searching for them tells us about problems in the river and its streams.  HRWC does stonefly searches to gauge the health of our streams. \nWhen you sign up to volunteer\, you will join a small group of other volunteers to search a selected stretch of stream or river for stoneflies. You will be working with experienced researchers to collect stoneflies. They will also teach you how we determine the health of the stream or river you are visiting. \nChildren are welcome to join the search as long as each one is attended by an adult. HRWC welcomes folks of all abilities to our events! Weather permitting\, some study sites are accessible to those who use mobility devices or have other mobility disabilities. Please contact Jason Frenzel ahead of the event to discuss options. \nThere are two start times: 9 or 10:30am (each shift will be 4-5 hours).  Volunteers start HRWC’s office at 117 N. 1st St\, Ste 100\, Ann Arbor\, and then go out to stream sites in Livingston\, Oakland\, or Washtenaw Counties. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Suds for the River
DESCRIPTION:Something is brewing… and you’re invited!\nSupport the Huron River Watershed Council while you enjoy craft beer\, chill mocktails\, fancy fare\, and familiar faces at Robin Hills Farm in Chelsea.  Bring your dancing shoes—you’ll need them! \nBuy your ticket HERE. \n  \nWondering why we moved Suds this year? We love hosting Suds at the Metroparks\, however\, with rising costs and uncertainty around traditional funding sources\, we need your dollars to support river programs\, not renting tents\, tables\, chairs\, lights etc. We’ll miss the river this year\, but we promise you a great celebration! Thank you for jumping on board with us as we reimagine Suds for maximum impact! \nRiver Revelers and River Guardians \nIf you can\, please raise your glass a little higher by purchasing River Reveler or River Guardian tickets\, which provide vital additional funds for innovative programs that protect and restore the Huron River watershed. \nIntegral to a healthy watershed is our local influence on land use. Join us for a special pre-party talk at 5:00 about water quality benefits of land preservation from Rosie Pahl Donaldson\, a land acquisition specialist with the City of Ann Arbor Greenbelt\, and hear about its newly launched Bluebelt initiative. Enjoy special local treats from Argus Farm Stop! \nRosie has been working in conservation and park planning in Washtenaw County for eight years. Before joining the City\, Rosie was a park planner for the Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission\, also coordinating conservation easement and new nature preserve acquisition under their Natural Areas Preservation Program. Her favorite part of her job is meeting people she probably would not have otherwise. \nLive Music \nHullabaloo creates original music influenced by ska\, reggae and punk blended with Latin rhythms\, with a few tasty covers mixed in. Since 1999\, the Hullabaloo experience has been an upbeat\, semi-chaotic showcase of musical expression. They are based in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area and can be found across social media.

SUMMARY:HRWC Winter Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:Please join HRWC’s annual Winter Stonefly Search volunteer event on Saturday\, January 18\, 2025. This is a great outdoor winter activity for individuals and groups of friends and family. \nThere are two start times: 9 am and 10:30 am. Please choose one and sign up HERE. \nAs part of a long-term river study\, each January\, HRWC looks for “winter stoneflies\,” which grow\, feed and find their mates in the coldest months when most fish are too sluggish to eat them. Stoneflies are very sensitive to changes in water quality and habitat. Like canaries in a coal mine\, they tell us a lot about the health of the river. \nTrained volunteer collectors take each team to HRWC’s study sites throughout the Huron River system\, where the group helps search through stones\, leaves\, and sediment taken from the river bottom. All equipment is provided. Participants are advised to dress for the weather. Volunteers meet in Ann Arbor and carpool to their assigned sites.
