SUMMARY:Dearborn Rain Garden 101 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join your Friends at this one-hour introductory presentation to learn about rain gardens and how you can build one in your own yard. Held in the auditorium at the Henry Ford Centennial Library\, this workshop is free and open to the public. No supplies are necessary\, but feel free to bring note taking materials if you are planning on taking notes. \nIn a rain garden\, beautiful Michigan native plants soak up rainwater runoff before it flows into storm drains. Rain gardens reduce neighborhood flooding\, basement backups\, and pollution flowing into your Rouge River. Rain gardens also provide habitat for songbirds\, butterflies and other important pollinators. You can be part of the solution right in your own yard! \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:2026 Frog and Toad Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Started in 1998\, the Rouge River Watershed Frog & Toad Survey is a volunteer listening survey as part of efforts to assess wildlife habitat for the Rouge River Area of Concern. \nVolunteers are trained to distinguish the breeding calls of the seven frogs and one toad found in the watershed. Surveyors choose a quarter square mile area within the watershed that they survey independently on warm spring nights. Volunteer surveyors commit to going out to assigned wetland blocks at least twice a month from March through July after dark\, listening for at least three minutes\, and record what species of frogs and toads are calling. We need community scientists like YOU to help collect this important data for Rouge River wetland health. \nSurvey Block: We seek to assign blocks that are close by or are of interest to the volunteer. To choose a survey block\, view the map (https://fotr-rep.maps.arcgis.com/apps/instant/basic/index.html?appid=6f2768349d7b4f7691bc48d27916d8d6)\, put in your address\, and choose a block with wetlands close to you. If you cannot locate one\, list the area you are interested in\, and we will choose one for you. Past surveyors\, feel free to respond “same as last year”. \nMANDATORY FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS: \nVolunteers attend a two-hour training workshop to learn about wetlands\, distinguish breeding calls\, and discover how to find the Rouge River amphibians. The 2026 Training Workshop will be held on Saturday\, February 21\, 2026 from 10 am – 12 pm at the Livonia Civic Center Library\, 32777 Five Mile Rd\, Livonia\, MI 48154. \nNew surveyors must attend the training. Veteran surveyors are not required but are encouraged to attend. \nSign up for the training HERE.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Rouge Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:Join your Friends to look for stoneflies! Stoneflies are a primitive group of insects named for their habitat of crawling on stones in a river. Most stoneflies have high oxygen needs\, restricting them to clean well-oxygenated streams. Because of this\, they are good indicators of stream quality. Some stoneflies hatch in winter\, which is why FOTR will be looking for them in January. \nEvent Date: Sat. January 24th\, 2026 from 10am-3pm(ish)\, meet at 10am: Jack Wilcox Theater inside Plymouth Arts and Recreation Complex\, 650 Church St\, Plymouth\, MI 48170. \n**There will be an indoor welcome from 10 am-11 am where volunteers will have a chance to meet their team\, enjoy refreshments (coffee\, juice\, bagels\, and donuts)\, and watch a short presentation before heading out to two sites throughout the watershed. SUMMARY:2025 Frog and Toad Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Register for the 2025 Frog and Toad Survey Training\nBackground\nAmphibians are sensitive indicators of habitat quality and their presence or absence can be used to assess wetland health. Wetlands absorb and filter stormwater\, helping to protect and clean the river. Wetlands also provide critical wildlife habitat. The presence of a diverse assemblage of frog and toad species is an indication of high quality wetlands. Calling amphibians (frogs and toads) can be readily surveyed through listening surveys. \nSurvey\nIn 1998\, as part of efforts to assess wildlife habitat for the Rouge River Area of Concern Friends of the Rouge began training volunteers to survey for calling frogs and toads in the watershed. \nThe Rouge River Watershed Frog & Toad Survey is a volunteer listening survey. Volunteers are trained to distinguish the breeding calls of the seven frogs and one toad found in the watershed. Surveyors choose a quarter square mile area within the watershed that they survey independently on warm spring nights. \nVolunteering\nVolunteers attend a two hour training workshop held in late winter/early spring. They are then assigned a survey block of a quarter square mile area with wetlands. Surveys are done independently on damp warm evenings from March through July. Surveys involve listening for three minutes and noting which species are calling. Surveys must be done after dark several times a month. Completed forms are returned to Friends of the Rouge who compiles\, maps and reports on the data.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Rouge Winter Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:In the winter we hold a Stonefly Search that is similar to the Bug Hunts except we only look for one type of bug. Stoneflies are very sensitive aquatic insects that hatch from streams in winter. See a map of sites that have been surveyed for stoneflies and results. To learn more about our Stonefly Searches\, how to identify stoneflies and what we find\, view the Stonefly Refresher. \nTo register\, visit https://therouge.org/bug-hunt-events-and-trainings/. \nAdditional Parameters Collected\nIn 2020\, we began partnering with the Izaak Walton League of America’s Salt Watch program and began testing Stonefly Search sites for road salt. Aquatic life in freshwater streams declines as salinity increases.  After finding high levels at many sites in January\, we added spring and fall testing to help determine the background level of chloride.  Stream quality index scores declined as salt levels increased (2021 Spring Bug Hunt Report). \n  \nIn 2023\, we added testing for nitrates and nitrates to our monitoring events once it was offered by the Izaac Walton League as “Nitrate Watch.”  Human activities have increased the amount of this essential nutrient going into our streams\, mainly from fertilizers\, manure and sewage. Excessive nitrate causes harmful algal blooms that threaten the health of the watershed and its inhabitants. Check out the Nitrate Watch Map.
