SUMMARY:Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers needed! Join us to collect samples of aquatic insects\, snails\, and algae from local rivers\, and learn what they reveal about water quality. When you participate in our biannual Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program\, you’ll spend a morning “in the field” as a community scientist by gathering indicator species (insects that help us study water quality) and looking for invasive species like New Zealand Mudsnails and Didymo. No experience required! You may volunteer from the shore or in the stream\, and we can provide waders if needed. \nTo prepare: please arrive at our office a few minutes early\, bring your own water\, and be prepared to work outdoors in or around water. If you need to borrow waders\, please let us know what boot size. Lunch is provided! \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. To register\, contact John Ransom at john@benziecd.org or 231-882-4391 x 13.

SUMMARY:Aquatic Invasive Species Webinar: Didymo
DESCRIPTION:Join the AIS Webinar\, “Didymo? How about Didy-less. Collaboration and citizen science to combat rock snot in Michigan” on Wednesday\, February 12\, at 12 pm EST. Dr. Jordyn Stoll\, Aquatic Ecologist with Michigan Trout Unlimited\, will be giving a talk through Zoom\, with 45 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes saved for questions. \nIn this webinar:\nDidymosphenia geminata\, commonly known as Didymo or “rock snot\,” is a diatom algae that causes significant ecological challenges when it blooms in Michigan’s coldwater streams. The causes behind these blooms remain unclear\, but researchers and community members are working together to understand and mitigate the risks. \nThis webinar will delve into the history and ecology of Didymo in Michigan\, its impact on rivers and native organisms\, and practical ways to prevent its spread. You’ll also learn how to get involved through monitoring\, reporting\, and clean gear practices to protect our waterways. Whether you’re an angler\, a conservation enthusiast\, or simply care about the health of Michigan’s rivers\, this webinars offers valuable insights and actions you can take to make a difference. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Jordyn Stoll\, Trout Unlimited \nJordyn’s formal interest in Aquatic Ecology began during her undergraduate work at Cleveland State University\, where she helped with research using diatom fossils to understand changes in lake conditions over time. From there\, she pursued a PhD at Kent State University\, where she studied the effects of nutrients on algae in the Great Lakes\, Lake Victoria in Kenya\, and the Cuyahoga River\, specifically aimed at better understanding harmful algal blooms. Now as an Aquatic Ecologist with Michigan TU\, she hopes to engage Michiganders in better understanding and preventing the spread of Didymo\, while also working to improve coldwater habitat through restoration efforts such as dam removals. \nRegister HERE. \nJoin the webinar via ZOOM using this link. \n

SUMMARY:Art and AIS: Paper Plant Models
DESCRIPTION:About the speaker:\nLinda Hamilton is a paper artist living in Almonte Ontario\, Canada. She creates realistic botanical models of plants and flowers using a variety of different papers\, glue\, wire\, and paint.\n\nIn this webinar:\nOver the years\, Linda has created many pieces for use as identification tools including native and non-native wildflowers\, grasses\, and aquatic plants. In 2024\, she created five large display boxes featuring submerged aquatic plants for Benzie Conservation District. These are being used to illustrate the differences between native and invasive species in our waters. \nIn this talk\, Linda will discuss her process of researching\, designing\, and creating accurate plant models. She will share examples of past and current projects\, and she’ll talk about the materials and tools she uses in her studio. Linda will also be available to answer any questions you may have about making and using three-dimensional models as teaching tools. \nTo see more of Linda’s work\, please visit her website at www.daydreamflowers.ca. \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

SUMMARY:How to Build a Boat Wash Station
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will examine the steps necessary to develop a boat wash station\, including permitting\, design\, and costs. \nAfter the discovery of Eurasian Watermilfoil (EWM) in Lake Leelanau in 2019\, the Lake Leelanau Lake Association recognized the need for boat wash stations to prevent the further introduction of invasive species and to limit the spread of EWM from Lake Leelanau to other lakes. With 14 public access sites on Lake Leelanau\, the team began by investigating the possibility of building a boat wash station at the lake’s busiest (DNR) boat access site.  With a handful of obstacles\, the boat wash station eventually came to fruition and paved the way for 3 more boat wash stations over the next three years. \nRegister for this free webinar HERE.

SUMMARY:Upper Platte River Clean Sweep 2023 - Benzie County
DESCRIPTION:Become a Benzie River Steward at the fifteenth annual Platte River Clean Sweep!\n\nClick here to register \nLast month\, during the sweep on the Betsie River\, 33 volunteers hit the river and collectively paddled from Homestead Dam all the way to Elberta. In thirteen miles\, and just a few hours\, the crews removed about 100 pounds of trash. Without their stewardship\, this litter could have continued to degrade into the water system or remain tangled in precious wildlife habitats. \nWant to get involved?\nUp next\, you’re invited to The Platte River Clean Sweep on July 15th. We’re aiming to remove harmful debris from over eight miles of the water. Home to the Platte River State Fish Hatchery and Weir\, this habitat supports tens of thousands of salmon\, and it is essential to their safety that the river is as free as possible from loose fishing line\, hooks\, plastic\, and other harmful debris. River cleanups are an ongoing effort and you can help make the best possible impact. \nThe details \n\nSaturday\, July 15\n9:00am -2:00pm\nMeet at Veteran’s Park in Honor for instructions and check-in\nPicnic immediately to follow (provided by the Benzie Conservation District)\n\nRegistration is required so that we can prepare enough food for all volunteers. \nThe Benzie Conservation District will provide cleanup tools (like grabbers and bags). Participants should bring their own boat\, life jacket\, insect repellent\, sunscreen\, and water. \nBefore launching\, please remember to practice the key habit of cleaning\, draining\, and drying your boat and equipment. The Clean\, Drain\, Dry\, Dispose approach stops harmful debris (and invasive species!) from entering the water we’re working to keep clean and safe. \nTo everyone who has helped keep this river healthy in the past\, whether by attending the Clean Sweep\, spreading the word\, or doing your part to dispose of waste properly\, thank you! We hope you’ll join us at the Platte River Clean Sweep in July. Please email info@benziecd.org with any questions or to register.

SUMMARY:Benzie Watershed Stream Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Since 2012 the Benzie Conservation District has been working with caring volunteers to help assess the quality and health the Benzie County’s lotic (flowing) waters. As part of Michigan Clean Water Corps’ Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program (VSMP) our teams have been collecting aquatic macroinvertebrates at nine sites within the Platte\, Betsie and Herring Lakes watersheds. Based on the types (taxonomic orders and families) of macroinvertebrates collected we can compute a Stream Quality Index (SQI) score for each site which will be used to track changes in water quality over time. \nIf you are interested in joining us or want to learn more please contact conservation specialist John Ransom at 231-882-4391 or john@benziecd.org. All ages and experience levels welcome. Sampling gear\, waders\, and lunch will be provided.\nVSMP is a biannual stream quality sampling event that takes place in the Spring and Fall. Volunteers assist with the collection of macroinvertebrates from multiple sites along the Platte and Betsie rivers. First time volunteers will be responsible for sorting through the samples\, picking out the macroinvertebrates from the rocks and leaves\, and putting them in a collection jar. No training is required and this is a great way to get introduced to the steam monitoring process and the interesting creatures that live in our rivers. Volunteers can also participate in the collection of samples if they are familiar with native aquatic habitats or are willing to undergo training in order to become familiar with the habitats. For more information Check out our Quality Assurance Project Plan. \nIf you have any questions or are interested in participating in our next collection event\, please contact our conservation specialist\, John Ransom\, at 231-882-4391 or john@benziecd.org.

SUMMARY:Adopt-A-Beach @ Elberta Beach!
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Elberta Beach\, end of Bye Road\, Elberta\, MI \n\nThe Adopt-a-Beach program is a regional volunteer opportunity sponsored by The Alliance for the Great Lakes. Each year nearly 15\,000 volunteers participate in beach clean-ups along the shores of all five great lakes. \nEach year\, in in spring and fall\, the Benzie Conservation District co-hosts with the Alliance for the Great Lake adopt-a-beach clean-ups We are always seeking volunteers to help remove trash and debris from the Lake Michigan shoreline. What makes this program special is that all of the results are tracked and the data is entered into an online system that helps to inform regional policy and educate the public. \nWe celebrate the natural resources of our planet with a Spring Kickoff\, Earth Day Beach Cleanup. And to make a difference in September with the larger global community celebrating International Coastal Cleanup Day (sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy)\, we also hold an Adopt-a-Beach Cleanup.. \nTo sign-up or learn more\, please contact Aimé Merizon\, communications & outreach specialist\, at aime@benziecd.org or 231-882-4391 x 11.
