SUMMARY:Chemistry and Flow Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Join our monitoring team this 2026 season. The monitoring season runs from April through September with outings in Washtenaw\, Wayne\, and a limited number in Livingston County. New volunteers are required to attend one of the 2-hour in-person orientations in March. Please register following the links below. \n\nWashtenaw County Orientation: Saturday\, March 14th 9am – 11am at HRWC\nWayne County Orientation: Saturday\, March 21st 9am – 11am at Lake Erie Metropark\n\nVolunteers who previously participated in the program in 2025 are not required to attend an in-person orientation and can sign up here. \nContact Kelly McCabe at kmccabe@hrwc.org if you have questions or for additional information. \nHelp us monitor our region’s waters!\nEnjoy being outdoors and want to help monitor the water quality of local rivers and creeks! Learn how to collect water samples\, measure stream flow\, and use hand-held chemistry sensors. No prior experience needed. \nEach year we offer a program orientation in March followed by in-field training in April for all interested participants. Trained volunteers are then expected to commit to at least 4 sampling trips during the growing season (April through September) to designated monitoring sites in Livingston\, Washtenaw\, or Wayne counties. During each 2 – 4 hour sampling trip\, volunteer teams work together to collect valuable chemistry and flow data that supports HRWC’s and our municipal partners’ work to protect and restore the Huron River and Downriver waterways. \n \nEXPLORE OUR DATA\nThanks to participants in this program\, HRWC has more than 20 years of Chemistry and Flow monitoring data. Explore this publicly available dataset following the links below and check out this blog for a summary of recent findings. For more information about the data\, find annual monitoring reports on our Chemistry and Flow Monitoring Program webpage or contact Kelly McCabe.

SUMMARY:Case for a Statewide Septic Code in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Michigan is the only state in the nation without uniform standards for septic systems — and it’s harming our waters. Failing septic systems release billions of gallons of untreated sewage each year\, contaminating the groundwater\, lakes\, and streams that supply drinking water across the state. On March 6\, 2026\, join Flow Water Advocates and a panel of leaders\, including state Senator Sam Singh\, for a conversation about the urgent need and historic opportunity to establish a statewide septic code that protects public health and safeguards fresh water. \nRegister for this free webinar HERE.

SUMMARY:Blue Water River Walk Winter Woody Workday
DESCRIPTION:St. Clair County Parks’ wetland project at the south end of the Blue Water River Walk was designed to provide wet prairie habitat for pollinators\, amphibians\, birds and other wildlife. The problem is that woody species want it to be a thicket! \nHelp us keep this project a haven for turtles\, fish\, and waterlilies by joining us to remove invasive shrubs and trees. \nBring your favorite work gloves and hand pruning tools; we’ll have extra if you don’t have your own. Dress for the weather in clothing that can get wet\, muddy or snagged. All ages and abilities welcome – we can modify tasks to suit abilities. \nThese events are co-hosted with St. Clair County Parks & Recreation Commission and Lake St. Clair CISMA. \nThis workday is approved for two Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) pesticide applicator re-certification credits. Pesticide applicators should bring their applicator number to the workday and will choose to apply credits to categories 2\, 3B\, 6\, or Commercial Core. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Dearborn Rain Garden 101 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join your Friends at this one-hour introductory presentation to learn about rain gardens and how you can build one in your own yard. Held in the auditorium at the Henry Ford Centennial Library\, this workshop is free and open to the public. No supplies are necessary\, but feel free to bring note taking materials if you are planning on taking notes. \nIn a rain garden\, beautiful Michigan native plants soak up rainwater runoff before it flows into storm drains. Rain gardens reduce neighborhood flooding\, basement backups\, and pollution flowing into your Rouge River. Rain gardens also provide habitat for songbirds\, butterflies and other important pollinators. You can be part of the solution right in your own yard! \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:2026 Frog and Toad Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Started in 1998\, the Rouge River Watershed Frog & Toad Survey is a volunteer listening survey as part of efforts to assess wildlife habitat for the Rouge River Area of Concern. \nVolunteers are trained to distinguish the breeding calls of the seven frogs and one toad found in the watershed. Surveyors choose a quarter square mile area within the watershed that they survey independently on warm spring nights. Volunteer surveyors commit to going out to assigned wetland blocks at least twice a month from March through July after dark\, listening for at least three minutes\, and record what species of frogs and toads are calling. We need community scientists like YOU to help collect this important data for Rouge River wetland health. \nSurvey Block: We seek to assign blocks that are close by or are of interest to the volunteer. SUMMARY:Jackson CD Winter Stonefly Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Come join us at for a Winter Stonefly Hunt! During this event we will search for stoneflies in our local rivers and streams. Stoneflies appear during the winter and require oxygen-rich waters to survive. They are also intolerant of pollution\, which makes them a great indicator of the water quality in our area. \nThe Winter Stonefly Hunt will be on Saturday\, February 7th from 10am to 2pm. Volunteers will help us look for stoneflies by stepping into a pair of waders to search in the water\, or by helping sort samples on the streambank (or both). No experience is necessary\, as we will provide some quick training and equipment. \nKids are welcome to attend as long as they are accompanied by an adult. \nWe will meet in the JCCD office at 211 W Ganson St\, Suite 200 Jackson MI 49201. Depending on the size of our group we will cover two sites OR split into two different groups and cover four sites. \nIf you would like to attend this Winter Stonefly Hunt\, please email colten@macd.org!

SUMMARY:2026 Winter Stonefly Search FOTSCR
DESCRIPTION:Rivers are full of life\, even in the depths of winter! \nTogether with the St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission\, we invite you to join us as we enter streams on a hunt for the elusive winter stonefly. These tiny insects\, equipped with a natural-antifreeze\, spend most of their lives as nymphs in the water and emerge as adults in winter when predators are mostly inactive. \nStonefly nymphs are very sensitive to water pollution\, prefer cool\, high-oxygen water\, and will not tolerate unhealthy conditions. When we find them thriving in a stream or river\, it’s a sign of good water quality. \nWe’re planning to survey the Belle River to look for this thriving cold-weather creature.  Meet us at Columbus County Park\, main lodge\, located at 1670 Bauman Rd in Columbus Township. No experience necessary to participate! We provide all the tools needed. You bring your warm winter gear\, and boots or waders. \nRegistration is required to participate in the Stonefly Search. Let us know you plan to attend by emailing our Education Manager\, Melissa\, at melissa@scriver.org. Once registered\, you will be contacted with further details about a location\, you Stream Team captain\, and wader requests. \nThank you to St. Clair County Parks and Recreation Commission for being a proud partner and co-host of Winter Stonefly Search.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Rouge Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:Join your Friends to look for stoneflies! Stoneflies are a primitive group of insects named for their habitat of crawling on stones in a river. Most stoneflies have high oxygen needs\, restricting them to clean well-oxygenated streams. Because of this\, they are good indicators of stream quality. Some stoneflies hatch in winter\, which is why FOTR will be looking for them in January. \nEvent Date: Sat. January 24th\, 2026 from 10am-3pm(ish)\, meet at 10am: Jack Wilcox Theater inside Plymouth Arts and Recreation Complex\, 650 Church St\, Plymouth\, MI 48170. \n**There will be an indoor welcome from 10 am-11 am where volunteers will have a chance to meet their team\, enjoy refreshments (coffee\, juice\, bagels\, and donuts)\, and watch a short presentation before heading out to two sites throughout the watershed. Ending times for each team will vary\, but most teams should be able to finish by 3 pm. \nIf you have a location preference\, please select the shift closest to that location. If you have no preference\, feel free to choose any shift that is not full. While we will do our best to honor your selection\, reassignment may be necessary based on availability. \nRegistration open until full or until January 11th\, 11:59 pm. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Septic System Policy in Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Failing septic systems have been recognized as a threat to public health and water quality in Michigan since at least the 1970s. Approximately 37\,000 miles\, or half\, of Michigan’s streams are classified as impaired by E. coli for Total Body Contact (i.e. swimming). While EGLE estimates a 10% failure rate of systems\, which would equate to 31 million gallons of raw sewage release per day\, evaluations from some county inspection programs indicate a septic system failure rate requiring corrective action at around 27%. Michigan must implement a statewide septic code requiring system inspections to address ongoing water quality degradation and end our unfortunate distinction as the only state in the nation without such a code. Learn why Michigan lacks a statewide code and what steps are being taken to change this. \nRegister HERE.
