SUMMARY:Friends of the Shiawassee River Annual River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:This week long volunteer event spans more than 60 miles of the Shiawassee River. Coordinating with public and private partners\, the Friends of the Shiawassee River brings volunteers from across the watershed together with one purpose\, to clean up the Shiawassee River. Historically items such as tires\, refuse\, metal \, and more are removed and deposited into one of two dumpsters provided by Waste Management for the event. There is one event dumpster located in Owosso\, MI and another in Chesaning\, MI.  \nThe event supports its volunteers with trash bags\, gloves-donated by Gloves-For-Good\, buckets\, and trash pickers as well as provides a cleanup t-shirt to those registered with the event. Volunteers can select their own section of the river (behind their home or park) or we can assign one to them. This ensures the greatest impact across the watershed.  If you would like to join us in 2025\, registration for the event will open in early June.  If you are unable to volunteer but would still like to contribute to our mission to Care\, Share\, and Enjoy the Shiawassee River click here to donate.  \nWe also partner with the Shiawassee Health Department to provide a Tire Collection\, open to the public\, in which you can drop off your tires to be recycled at a discounted rate. All tires pulled from the river will be recycled for free and we will give you information on how to do that after you have registered.

SUMMARY:2025 MiCorps Aquatic Invasive Species Detection Blitz
DESCRIPTION:The MiCorps Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Detection Blitz is a statewide community science event aimed at identifying and documenting aquatic invasive species\, such as zebra mussels\, Eurasian watermilfoil\, or anything else you suspect might be invasive in Michigan’s lakes\, rivers\, and wetlands. \nOrganized by the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps)\, Michigan’s volunteer lake and stream monitoring program administered by Michigan State University Extension\, this Blitz welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds\, whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a first-time observer. Between June 28 and July 6\, simply snap photos of potential invasive species and upload them to the MiCorps project on the free iNaturalist app. By working together in this coordinated effort\, we can track the spread of AIS\, strengthen early detection strategies\, and inform better management decisions. Whether you’re on the water for the July 4th holiday or just enjoying a local spot\, every observation counts! \nWatch their webinar\, “Getting Started with the MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz” below. \nTo learn more\, visit https://www.micorps.net/events/micorps-aquatic-invasive-species-detection-blitz/.

SUMMARY:Septic Health Check
DESCRIPTION:Septic Health Check: A Deep Dive into Inspections & Maintenance\nTopic Summary: Northwoods will be conducting an inspection of a septic system in Itasca County\, highlighting the key aspects we assess as septic inspectors. Individual septic systems often provide superior waste treatment compared to municipal treatment plants\, thereby ensuring that the water returned to the environment is safe for both humans and wildlife. Proper installation and maintenance are crucial for ensuring the longevity of a septic system. \nPresented by: Northwoods Excavating\, a small\, family-owned and operated (wife\, husband\, daughter and more) excavating business based in Balsam\, MN. They have been installing\, designing\, and inspecting septic systems in the Itasca County area since 1998. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:2025 Spring Stream Monitoring Identification
DESCRIPTION:**This event has been rescheduled to May 30th due to a power outage at The University of Olivet.** \nLearn what it takes to be a community scientist at this free event! You will help to identify the aquatic insects collected from Eaton County streams to calculate a water quality score. Volunteers will meet in a science classroom in the C.S. Mott Academic Center at The University of Olivet. All equipment will be provided\, and refreshments will be available. \nFor more information\, contact Val Reisen at val.reisen@macd.org or 517-588-6302. \nRegister HERE. \nThe Eaton County Collaborative Stream Monitoring Program was established through Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps) grants and operates in partnership between The University of Olivet and Eaton Conservation District. The monitoring program consists of sites in Eaton County within the Upper Thornapple River watershed. The design of the monitoring program focuses on cooperative learning and building relationships between volunteer community scientists and students. Through this collaborative structure\, the program is designed for longevity in collecting macroinvertebrate and habitat data throughout the county each fall and spring\, and aims to achieve the following outcomes: \n\nProvide new and continuous macroinvertebrate collection and habitat assessment data that will assist in assessing the success of any restoration projects and updating the watershed management plan;\n\n\nEducate and collaboratively engage Eaton County residents\, students\, and other stakeholders in monitoring\, upholding quality\, and protecting water resources; and\n\n\nIdentify or verify problem areas where degradation has occurred and where future remediation efforts or best management practices can be implemented.

SUMMARY:Coastal Processes and Adapting to Coastal Change on Michigan’s Great Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Michigan is defined by its Great Lakes coast. The coastlines of the Great Lakes are a dynamic environment affected by waves\, wind\, ice\, and water level changes. The changing shoreline is key to the health of our Great Lakes\, yet they create hazards for communities and individuals that live along them. \nZach Chamberlin\, Great Lakes Shorelands Specialist\, and Emily Kirkpatrick\, Coastal Hazards Coordinator from EGLE’s Water Resource Division will give an overview of coastal processes and coastal change on the Great Lakes. They will cover how natural shorelines are resilient\, how communities and individuals can adapt to coastal change\, and how to plan for the next high-water event. This webinar is intended for anyone with an interest in Great Lakes coasts\, including coastal community leaders\, planners\, contractors\, and individuals living along the Great Lakes. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Talking about the Clean Water Act
DESCRIPTION:NAWM American Wetlands Month Webinar: Talking about the Clean Water Act Without Getting Bogged Down in the Reeds \nThe National Wildlife Federation is pleased to present the Waters Storytelling Toolkit. The toolkit is meant to be used by local advocates of every stripe — Tribes\, community members\, policy experts\, etc. — to help tell the story of why protecting wetlands and smaller streams in their area is important. The presentation gives an overview of the Clean Water Act and the 2023 Sackett Supreme Court decision that revoked protections for streams and wetlands long protected by the law. The toolkit also provides messaging recommendations and describes a variety of potential story frames. Each section has a succinct slide deck and an accompanying video with more discussion and detail. NWF’s ultimate goal is to create a broader base of public support for strong water protections at the local\, state and federal levels. \nRegister HERE. \nSpeaker BIOS  \n \nJim Murphy is the Senior Director of Legal Advocacy with National Wildlife Federation (NWF) where he advances National Wildlife Federation’s legal engagement with the judicial\, administrative\, and legislative branches of government in order to protect wildlife\, with a focus on water\, energy\, and climate issues including advancing regulatory solutions to carbon pollution\, protecting the nation’s waters and wetlands\, and promoting clean\, wildlife friendly renewable energy. He also serves on several boards\, including the Renewable Energy Wildlife Institute\, the Vermont Advisory Board for the Conservation Law Foundation which he currently chairs\, and is Chair of the Montpelier Roxbury School District Board of Directors. In collaboration with NWF\, he directed the Vermont Law School Environmental Advocacy Clinic from 2019-2022 and was an assistant professor at the law school. He has an LL.M.\, summa cum laude\, in Environmental Law from Vermont Law School\, a J.D. from Boston College Law School\, and B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Vermont. \n \nLacey McCormick leads the National Wildlife Federation’s Clean Water Act defense messaging. Over her two decades at NWF\, she has led messaging on a number of other water issues\, from the Federation’s years-long effort to hold BP accountable for the Gulf oil disaster to the need to ensure enough water flows in Texas’ streams. She has a master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin. She lives in Austin\, TX with her husband and two sons. \n  \n

SUMMARY:2025 Cedar River Stream Sampling
DESCRIPTION:Little Forks began monitoring the water quality of the Cedar River starting in 2015\, and with the help of volunteers\, we’ve captured 10 years of water quality data in the Cedar River Watershed through sampling for macroinvertebrates. With an increase in restoration projects and land protection along the watershed\, we have documented positive changes in the quality of the river. \nEvent Agenda and Information: \nWe will meet at Gladwin Conservation District Community Garden pavilion on Saturday\, May 17th at 10am to review the protocol for the day and divide into teams. We will sample six sites along the Cedar River in both Gladwin and Clare counties to collect macroinvertebrates\, insects and animals without a backbone that can be seen with the naked eye. After collection\, we will reconvene at the pavilion for lunch\, provided by Little Forks Conservancy. \nUsing the specimens found in the river\, we can determine the quality of the water. This is done on ID Night where volunteers can help identify the collected specimens. ID Night will take place on Monday\, May 19th from 5:30-7pm at the Little Forks office in Midland (125 McDonald St\, 2nd floor). If you would like to join us for ID Night\, please send and email to lkelsey@littleforks.org \nLearn more about stream sampling at https://www.littleforks.org/stream-sampling.html \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:River Raisin Watershed Council Adopt-A-Stream
DESCRIPTION:Interested in being a part of Adopt-a-Stream? \nVolunteer with us to look for and collect macroinvertebrates (aquatic bugs) on the bottoms of streams. Collection involves wading into a stream and using a special net to collect the insects. Sorters will be stationed along the bank and sift through the nets to extract the macro-invertebrates and place them in jars for further analysis on Bug ID Day. The Stream Captain directs the volunteers and ensures all tasks have been completed and every one is working safely. \nWhy do we do this? \nThese bugs tell us about the quality of the water in the streams and rivers. Certain species can tolerate more pollution and lower oxygen than others\, meaning when we find only those species\, the stream isn’t as healthy as it could be. Knowing this\, we can focus more conservation efforts and funds in the areas that need it most! \nThe time has come around again for RRWC staff and volunteers to participate in an age-old survey effort! Join us as we search for aquatic macroinvertebrates in order to better understand the water quality of the River Raisin Watershed. We invite you to jump on in at the following sites and locations: \n\nMonday\, May 12th\, 2025: Meeting at TBD\, Clinton\, MI.\nWednesday\, May 14th\, 2025: Meeting at Mill Pond Park\, Saline. \nThursday\, May 15th\, 2025: Meeting at Veterans Park\, Monroe. \nThursday\, May 15th\, 2025: Meeting at River Raisin Access (74 Ida Maybee Rd\, Monroe\, MI 48161). \nSaturday\, May 17th\, 2025: Meeting at Swain Memorial Park\, Brooklyn\, MI. \n\nPlease register below for the events and select which days/times you plan to attend. SUMMARY:Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers needed! Join us to collect samples of aquatic insects\, snails\, and algae from local rivers\, and learn what they reveal about water quality. When you participate in our biannual Volunteer Stream Monitoring Program\, you’ll spend a morning “in the field” as a community scientist by gathering indicator species (insects that help us study water quality) and looking for invasive species like New Zealand Mudsnails and Didymo. No experience required! You may volunteer from the shore or in the stream\, and we can provide waders if needed. \nTo prepare: please arrive at our office a few minutes early\, bring your own water\, and be prepared to work outdoors in or around water. If you need to borrow waders\, please let us know what boot size. Lunch is provided! \nREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. To register\, contact John Ransom at john@benziecd.org or 231-882-4391 x 13.

SUMMARY:2025 Spring Stream Monitoring Day 2
DESCRIPTION:Learn what it takes to be a community scientist at this free event! You will help to collect aquatic insects to monitor the water quality of Eaton County streams. Volunteers will meet at the C.S. Mott Academic Center at The University of Olivet to review stream monitoring protocols before going out into the field. All equipment will be provided\, though volunteers should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.
