SUMMARY:Paint Creek Habitat Restoration
DESCRIPTION:Starting July 29th\, we will be installing 56 log structures on the Phase 4 section of Paint Creek and 27 additional structures on Phase 3.  Volunteers should bring gloves and waders (optional\, can wet-wade). \nEach day we will be meeting at the Paint Creek Trail parking lot on Tienken Rd at 9:30am. \nAddress:  1075 Paint Creek Ln\, Rochester Hills\, MI 48306 \n\n\n\nDaily work involves:\n\nTowing a canoe with tools (small generator\, sledge hammers\, saws\, steel rods\, etc.)\nDrilling holes through the logs for the steel rods\nHold logs in place while steel spikes are driven into the creek bed to hold them in place\nPull 10 – 20 foot logs from the woods\nPound 4 foot steel rods with a sledge hammer\nCollect in-stream rocks to place along / behind the logs once they are anchored\nLast time we let the volunteers decide where and how to place the final logs in the creek.\n\n\n\nFor convenience\, we have divided the work days up into two 4-hour time slots for each day.  You may register for as many or as few as you wish.  This would be an ideal opportunity to use any employer-provided volunteer PTO days – or for any students*\, a great way to log volunteer hours! \n*Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and be able to wade safely and move heavy objects (rocks\, logs\, equipment) to participate. \nThank you for supporting our effort to restore and preserve Paint Creek\, and we hope to see you there! \n\n\nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:The Fish Thief: A Great Lakes Mystery
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT!  GREAT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!\n6:30 pm:  Come early to see and touch live sea lamprey before the movie!!!\nPick up brochures and fun goodies about lamprey and their control.  (Courtesy of Hammond Bay Biological Station)\n7:00 pm:  The Fish Thief movie\, followed by questions and answers with researchers from Hammond Bay Biological Station. \nFilm is 90 minutes long. \nSponsored by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission\, the Black Lake Association\, and Friends of the Onaway Library. Don’t miss The Fish Thief: A Great Lakes Mystery\, a gripping documentary about the destructive effect of the invasive sea lamprey that nearly destroyed the Great Lakes fishery. \nCome early to see the live sea lamprey\, watch the movie\, and stay to have all your questions about these invasive predators answered. \n\n\n\nThe Fish Thief\, produced by SkyhoundMedia and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission\, and narrated by Oscar winning actor J.K. Simmons\, tells the dramatic story of the sea lampreys’ invasion in the 20th century and the ongoing efforts to control and repair the damage done. These predators created an environmental crisis that almost completely wiped out lake trout\, whitefish\, and other key fish populations. The heavy destruction to the fishery destroyed jobs and businesses. It threatened local industries\, small town economies\, and indigenous populations in the United States and Canada. Natural resources and recreational fishing were permanently jeopardized. \n\n\n\nThe riveting story of the extraordinary cooperative efforts of international scientists\, policy makers\, and conservationists to save the Great Lakes is at the heart of the film. The fight to control the sea lamprey population and to repair\, restore\, and manage critical natural resources still requires massive ongoing effort. For those reasons alone\, you’ll want to see it. \n\n\n\nLocally\, The Fish Thief holds great personal interest because it takes place here. Places that you know well\, such as the Ocqueoc River and Falls\, Bells Fishery in Cheboygan\, and the historical Hammond Bay Biological Station\, for example\, are featured. People that you remember appear in images from the past. \nThe Fish Thief is 90 minutes long and will be followed by a brief question and answer session with Roger Bergstedt\, a retired research fishery biologist specializing in lamprey research for 25 years at the Hammond Bay Biological Station\, and Scott Miehls\, a current Hammond Bay biologist with a contemporary perspective of cutting-edge sea lamprey control methods. \nTo watch the trailer and for more information about the film\, see www.thefishthief.com

SUMMARY:Friends of the Shiawassee River Annual River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:This week long volunteer event spans more than 60 miles of the Shiawassee River. Coordinating with public and private partners\, the Friends of the Shiawassee River brings volunteers from across the watershed together with one purpose\, to clean up the Shiawassee River. Historically items such as tires\, refuse\, metal \, and more are removed and deposited into one of two dumpsters provided by Waste Management for the event. There is one event dumpster located in Owosso\, MI and another in Chesaning\, MI.  \nThe event supports its volunteers with trash bags\, gloves-donated by Gloves-For-Good\, buckets\, and trash pickers as well as provides a cleanup t-shirt to those registered with the event. Volunteers can select their own section of the river (behind their home or park) or we can assign one to them. This ensures the greatest impact across the watershed.  If you would like to join us in 2025\, registration for the event will open in early June.  If you are unable to volunteer but would still like to contribute to our mission to Care\, Share\, and Enjoy the Shiawassee River click here to donate.  \nWe also partner with the Shiawassee Health Department to provide a Tire Collection\, open to the public\, in which you can drop off your tires to be recycled at a discounted rate. All tires pulled from the river will be recycled for free and we will give you information on how to do that after you have registered.

SUMMARY:2025 MiCorps Aquatic Invasive Species Detection Blitz
DESCRIPTION:The MiCorps Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Detection Blitz is a statewide community science event aimed at identifying and documenting aquatic invasive species\, such as zebra mussels\, Eurasian watermilfoil\, or anything else you suspect might be invasive in Michigan’s lakes\, rivers\, and wetlands. \nOrganized by the Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps)\, Michigan’s volunteer lake and stream monitoring program administered by Michigan State University Extension\, this Blitz welcomes volunteers of all backgrounds\, whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a first-time observer. Between June 28 and July 6\, simply snap photos of potential invasive species and upload them to the MiCorps project on the free iNaturalist app. By working together in this coordinated effort\, we can track the spread of AIS\, strengthen early detection strategies\, and inform better management decisions. Whether you’re on the water for the July 4th holiday or just enjoying a local spot\, every observation counts! \nWatch their webinar\, “Getting Started with the MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz” below. \nTo learn more\, visit https://www.micorps.net/events/micorps-aquatic-invasive-species-detection-blitz/.

SUMMARY:Talking about the Clean Water Act
DESCRIPTION:NAWM American Wetlands Month Webinar: Talking about the Clean Water Act Without Getting Bogged Down in the Reeds \nThe National Wildlife Federation is pleased to present the Waters Storytelling Toolkit. The toolkit is meant to be used by local advocates of every stripe — Tribes\, community members\, policy experts\, etc. — to help tell the story of why protecting wetlands and smaller streams in their area is important. The presentation gives an overview of the Clean Water Act and the 2023 Sackett Supreme Court decision that revoked protections for streams and wetlands long protected by the law. The toolkit also provides messaging recommendations and describes a variety of potential story frames. Each section has a succinct slide deck and an accompanying video with more discussion and detail. NWF’s ultimate goal is to create a broader base of public support for strong water protections at the local\, state and federal levels. \nRegister HERE. \nSpeaker BIOS  \n \nJim Murphy is the Senior Director of Legal Advocacy with National Wildlife Federation (NWF) where he advances National Wildlife Federation’s legal engagement with the judicial\, administrative\, and legislative branches of government in order to protect wildlife\, with a focus on water\, energy\, and climate issues including advancing regulatory solutions to carbon pollution\, protecting the nation’s waters and wetlands\, and promoting clean\, wildlife friendly renewable energy. He also serves on several boards\, including the Renewable Energy Wildlife Institute\, the Vermont Advisory Board for the Conservation Law Foundation which he currently chairs\, and is Chair of the Montpelier Roxbury School District Board of Directors. In collaboration with NWF\, he directed the Vermont Law School Environmental Advocacy Clinic from 2019-2022 and was an assistant professor at the law school. He has an LL.M.\, summa cum laude\, in Environmental Law from Vermont Law School\, a J.D. from Boston College Law School\, and B.A. in Political Science and History from the University of Vermont. \n \nLacey McCormick leads the National Wildlife Federation’s Clean Water Act defense messaging. Over her two decades at NWF\, she has led messaging on a number of other water issues\, from the Federation’s years-long effort to hold BP accountable for the Gulf oil disaster to the need to ensure enough water flows in Texas’ streams. She has a master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin. She lives in Austin\, TX with her husband and two sons. \n  \n
