SUMMARY:How Zebra Mussels are Changing Fish Contaminants
DESCRIPTION:Zebra mussels are invasive species that can reshape entire lake ecosystems\, with surprising and far-reaching effects. Researchers have discovered that zebra mussels—well-known for clogging pipes and outcompeting native species—may also be quietly increasing mercury levels in popular game fish like walleye and yellow perch. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that threatens both aquatic life and human health. In lakes invaded by zebra mussels\, fish were up to 72% higher in mercury—reaching risky levels at smaller sizes compared to lakes without zebra mussels. \nIn this webinar\, University of Minnesota fisheries ecologist Dr. Gretchen Hansen will explain how zebra mussels are altering where fish feed\, how mercury moves through the food web\, and what that means for anglers and communities across Minnesota. She’ll also share what’s happening now—a new\, collaborative effort with state and tribal agencies to build predictive models and create mercury risk maps to help monitor\, manage\, and potentially mitigate these emerging threats. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Harmful Algae Blooms and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join Itasca Waters and Minnesota Sea Grant in learning about how climate change plays a role in harmful algae blooms (HABs) as part of the Itasca Water Wisdom online webinar series\, co-sponsored by MNSG. \nCyanobacteria\, also known as blue-green algae\, present a complex management challenge in lakes because they can rapidly form dense surface scums\, or blooms\, that are difficult to predict. Under the right conditions and with the right types of cyanobacteria\, cyanobacteria blooms can become harmful when certain cyanobacteria strains produce potent toxins that make people sick and can kill pets and wildlife. Worldwide\, cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (cHABs) are anticipated to become more prevalent\, more frequent\, and more severe under future climate and land use scenarios. While cHABs have long been known to occur in warm water\, nutrient-rich lakes\, such as those in southern Minnesota\, their expansion into colder\, low-nutrient lakes of northern Minnesota\, including recent occurrences of cyanobacteria blooms in nearshore Lake Superior\, signifies that cyanobacteria are already responding to global change. \nIn this talk\, Christopher Filstrup\, Ph.D.\, will discuss how cyanobacteria are well adapted to future climate conditions\, what factors may be contributing to their expansion into lakes where they were previously rare\, and what potential strategies we can use to mitigate severe cHABs. \nThis webinar is free and open to the public\, but advance registration is required. \nSpeaker \n\nChristopher Filstrup\, Ph.D.\, University of Minnesota Duluth Natural Resources Research Institute\, Applied Limnologist & Director of Central Analytical Lab

SUMMARY:HABs 101 Webinar: Lake Stories
DESCRIPTION:Get top tips for preventing and managing harmful algal blooms in inland waters!\n \nIn previous “HABs 101” webinars\, we learned about the basics of harmful algal blooms and the value of algae in aquatic ecosystems. In August\, you will hear firsthand from Michiganders who are tackling harmful algal blooms (HABs) in their inland lakes. See how they’re bringing neighborhoods and communities together to identify challenges and explore solutions. Michigan Sea Grant Director Silvia Newell will also share her perspective as a researcher putting potential HABs solutions to the test. \nHosted by Michigan Sea Grant and partners around the state. \nWant to dive deeper into HABs? SUMMARY:The Fish Thief: A Great Lakes Mystery
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT!  GREAT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!\n6:30 pm:  Come early to see and touch live sea lamprey before the movie!!!\nPick up brochures and fun goodies about lamprey and their control.  (Courtesy of Hammond Bay Biological Station)\n7:00 pm:  The Fish Thief movie\, followed by questions and answers with researchers from Hammond Bay Biological Station. \nFilm is 90 minutes long. \nSponsored by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission\, the Black Lake Association\, and Friends of the Onaway Library. Don’t miss The Fish Thief: A Great Lakes Mystery\, a gripping documentary about the destructive effect of the invasive sea lamprey that nearly destroyed the Great Lakes fishery. \nCome early to see the live sea lamprey\, watch the movie\, and stay to have all your questions about these invasive predators answered. \n\n\n\nThe Fish Thief\, produced by SkyhoundMedia and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission\, and narrated by Oscar winning actor J.K. Simmons\, tells the dramatic story of the sea lampreys’ invasion in the 20th century and the ongoing efforts to control and repair the damage done. These predators created an environmental crisis that almost completely wiped out lake trout\, whitefish\, and other key fish populations. The heavy destruction to the fishery destroyed jobs and businesses. It threatened local industries\, small town economies\, and indigenous populations in the United States and Canada. Natural resources and recreational fishing were permanently jeopardized. \n\n\n\nThe riveting story of the extraordinary cooperative efforts of international scientists\, policy makers\, and conservationists to save the Great Lakes is at the heart of the film. The fight to control the sea lamprey population and to repair\, restore\, and manage critical natural resources still requires massive ongoing effort. For those reasons alone\, you’ll want to see it. \n\n\n\nLocally\, The Fish Thief holds great personal interest because it takes place here. Places that you know well\, such as the Ocqueoc River and Falls\, Bells Fishery in Cheboygan\, and the historical Hammond Bay Biological Station\, for example\, are featured. People that you remember appear in images from the past. \nThe Fish Thief is 90 minutes long and will be followed by a brief question and answer session with Roger Bergstedt\, a retired research fishery biologist specializing in lamprey research for 25 years at the Hammond Bay Biological Station\, and Scott Miehls\, a current Hammond Bay biologist with a contemporary perspective of cutting-edge sea lamprey control methods. \nTo watch the trailer and for more information about the film\, see www.thefishthief.com
