SUMMARY:Fall 2025 MiCorps Sampling Barry CD
DESCRIPTION:The Barry Conservation District\, in partnership with the Thornapple River Watershed Council (TRWC) and Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds (LGROW)\, received a Michigan Clean Water Corps (MiCorps) Volunteer Stream Monitoring Implementation Grant for water quality monitoring in the Thornapple River Watershed. \nThis monitoring grant provides us with the training and equipment to perform macroinvertebrate sampling throughout the watershed to monitor water quality conditions by collecting macroinvertebrates. Macro – big enough to be seen by the naked eye | Invertebrate – animal without a backbone \nMacroinvertebrate sampling is an easy and fun way to determine water quality. Some macroinvertebrates are very sensitive and can only survive in high quality waters\, others can live with high amounts of pollution present. This is a great way to get a long-term view on current water quality. \nTo learn more\, visit https://www.barrycd.org/events/fall-micorps-sampling. \nRegister to volunteer HERE.

SUMMARY:Fall Cedar River Stream Sampling 2025
DESCRIPTION:Little Forks Conservancy began monitoring the water quality of the Cedar River starting in 2015\, and with the help of volunteers\, we’ve captured 10 years of water quality data in the Cedar River Watershed through sampling for macroinvertebrates. With an increase in restoration projects and land protection along the watershed\, we have documented positive changes in the quality of the river. \nEvent Agenda and Information: \nWe will meet at Gladwin Conservation District’s Community Garden on Saturday\, September 13th at 10am to review the protocol for the day and divide into teams. We will sample six sites along the Cedar River in both Gladwin and Clare counties to collect macroinvertebrates\, insects and animals without a backbone that can be seen with the naked eye. After collection\, we will reconvene at the community garden for lunch\, provided by Little Forks Conservancy. \nUsing the specimens found in the river\, we can determine the quality of the water. This is done on ID Night where volunteers help identify the collected specimens. ID Night will take place on Monday\, September 15th from 5:30-7pm at the Little Forks office in Midland (125 McDonald St\, 2nd floor). If you would like to join us for ID Night\, please send and email to lkelsey@littleforks.org \nLearn more about stream sampling at https://www.littleforks.org/stream-sampling.html \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:River Raisin Watershed Council Adopt-A-Stream
DESCRIPTION:Interested in being a part of Adopt-a-Stream? \nVolunteer with us to look for and collect macroinvertebrates (aquatic bugs) on the bottoms of streams. Collection involves wading into a stream and using a special net to collect the insects. Sorters will be stationed along the bank and sift through the nets to extract the macro-invertebrates and place them in jars for further analysis on Bug ID Day. The Stream Captain directs the volunteers and ensures all tasks have been completed and every one is working safely. \nWhy do we do this? \nThese bugs tell us about the quality of the water in the streams and rivers. Certain species can tolerate more pollution and lower oxygen than others\, meaning when we find only those species\, the stream isn’t as healthy as it could be. Knowing this\, we can focus more conservation efforts and funds in the areas that need it most! \nThe time has come around again for RRWC staff and volunteers to participate in an age-old survey effort! Join us as we search for aquatic macroinvertebrates in order to better understand the water quality of the River Raisin Watershed. We invite you to jump on in at the following sites and locations: \n\nMonday\, May 12th\, 2025: Meeting at TBD\, Clinton\, MI.\nWednesday\, May 14th\, 2025: Meeting at Mill Pond Park\, Saline. \nThursday\, May 15th\, 2025: Meeting at Veterans Park\, Monroe. \nThursday\, May 15th\, 2025: Meeting at River Raisin Access (74 Ida Maybee Rd\, Monroe\, MI 48161). \nSaturday\, May 17th\, 2025: Meeting at Swain Memorial Park\, Brooklyn\, MI. \n\nPlease register below for the events and select which days/times you plan to attend. Please bring a water bottle and bring your own waterproof boots or waders. We will have a limited number of waders available for those who do not have their own. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Stream Team Spring Monitoring Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Spring is around the corner\, which means we’re gearing up for our annual Stream Team Spring Monitoring field day on Saturday\, May 3rd at 10 a.m. \nIf you want to support your river\, Stream Team is for you! We host water quality monitoring events every spring to gather data used for monitoring and conservation efforts. From donning waders and using nets\, to peering through microscopes\, Stream Team volunteers help track the health of our rivers. \nJoin us as we dig into streams and rivers to search for aquatic insects. Macroinvertebrates are aquatic insects and other small bugs that live in rivers and streams. Each species of macroinvertebrate tolerates pollution differently. Some are sensitive to pollution\, such as mayflies\, so finding them is a good thing. It means our waters are not only healthy enough to support them\, but also healthy enough to support us. \nVolunteers can participate in or out of the water and may borrow our waders. Families are welcome and no experience is needed. \nFor questions and to register\, email our Education Manager at melissa@scriver.org.

SUMMARY:Van Buren CD - 2025 Stream Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:What is Stream Monitoring? \nThe Van Buren Conservation District\, Two Rivers Coalition\, and volunteers come together to protect our water. We wade into rivers and streams to collect macroinvertebrates (bugs and the like) to monitor our water’s health. We always have fun\, and you don’t need experience to join in! \nWhy bugs/macroinvertebrates?\nOne cup of water gives us a snapshot of water health at that exact moment. Bugs and macroinvertebrates live in our lakes\, rivers\, and streams for a day to months to many years. By collecting them\, we get the bigger picture of our water’s health. The more we know about our water’s health\, the better we keep it healthy and safe. \nCome Along!\nWhether you want to be in the water\, on land\, or somewhere in-between\, we have something for you.\n🙋 Collector – in waders get into the water and collect bugs and macroinvertebrates\n🏃‍♂️ Runner – the go-between the collector and picker\, bringing what’s collected in the water to the pickers on the bank\n🐛 Picker – with provided tools\, pick out macroinvertebrates from collected materials \nSign up and meet us on Sunday\, April 27 at the River Point Access in Lawrence (north of the Lawrence Township Hall (411 N Paw Paw St.\, Lawrence\, MI 49064)) at 1:00 PM. SUMMARY:Clinton River Watershed Council Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:Winter stoneflies (Capniidae and Taeniopterygidae) are important biotic indicators of water quality. Their increasing numbers are one way we can tell that water quality has greatly improved from historical conditions in the early and mid-1900’s. \nThese stoneflies have natural anti-freeze in their blood\, so they are able to remain active in the winter months. Reproducing in the winter allows them to avoid many predators and increase their chance of surviving into adulthood. Stonefly nymphs are extremely sensitive to water pollution and develop in cool\, well-oxygenated water. The presence of stoneflies is an indicator of good water quality\, and their absence in areas where they previously occurred may indicate pollution. \nThe Search – Each winter\, teams of volunteers canvass winter stonefly populations at locations along the Clinton River and its tributaries. This fun and educational event is free\, family-friendly\, and open to the public – no experience required! \nHow It Works – Volunteers all meet at the Clinton River Watershed Council office at 9:00 a.m. on February 1st. Based on previous experience\, volunteers will receive a short training or team leader refresher to prepare for the search. \nLed by Team Leaders\, volunteers will split into teams to survey sites throughout the watershed to look for this thriving cold-weather creature. Team Leaders help their groups coordinate and follow site procedures to ensure that stonefly data is being collected safely and consistently. \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Winter Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:Rivers are full of life\, even in the depths of winter! Join Friends of the St. Clair River staff and Stream Team volunteers as we enter streams on a hunt for the elusive winter stonefly. These tiny insects\, equipped with a natural antifreeze\, spend most of their lives as nymphs in the water and emerge as adults in winter when predators are mostly inactive. Stonefly nymphs are very sensitive to water pollution\, prefer cool\, high-oxygen water\, and will not tolerate unhealthy conditions. When we find them thriving in a stream or river\, it’s a sign of good water quality. We’re planning to survey the Belle River to look for this thriving cold-weather creature. \nMeet us at Columbus County Park main lodge\, located at 1670 Bauman Rd in Columbus Township. No experience is necessary to participate! We provide all the tools needed. You bring your warm winter gear\, and boots or waders. Registration is required to participate in the Stonefly Search. Let us know that you plan to attend by emailing our Education Manager\, Melissa\, at melissa@scriver.org. Once registered\, you will be contacted with further details about a location\, your Stream Team captain\, and wader requests.

SUMMARY:HRWC Winter Stonefly Search
DESCRIPTION:Please join HRWC’s annual Winter Stonefly Search volunteer event on Saturday\, January 18\, 2025. This is a great outdoor winter activity for individuals and groups of friends and family. \nThere are two start times: 9 am and 10:30 am. Please choose one and sign up HERE. \nAs part of a long-term river study\, each January\, HRWC looks for “winter stoneflies\,” which grow\, feed and find their mates in the coldest months when most fish are too sluggish to eat them. Stoneflies are very sensitive to changes in water quality and habitat. Like canaries in a coal mine\, they tell us a lot about the health of the river. \nTrained volunteer collectors take each team to HRWC’s study sites throughout the Huron River system\, where the group helps search through stones\, leaves\, and sediment taken from the river bottom. All equipment is provided. Participants are advised to dress for the weather. Volunteers meet in Ann Arbor and carpool to their assigned sites.

SUMMARY:Cedar River Stream Sampling
DESCRIPTION:Little Forks began monitoring the water quality of the Cedar River back in 2015 and with an increase in restoration projects and land protection along the watershed\, we have documented positive changes in the quality of the river. \nWe will meet at Gladwin Conservation District Community Garden pavilion on Saturday\, September 7th at 10am to review the protocol for the day and divide into teams. We will sample six sites along the Cedar River in both Gladwin and Clare counties to collect macroinvertebrates\, animals without a backbone that can be seen with the naked eye. After collection\, we will reconvene at the Pavilion for lunch! \nUsing the specimens found in the river\, we can determine the quality of the water. This is done on ID Night where volunteers can help identify the collected specimens. ID Night will take place on Monday\, September 9th from 5:30-7pm at the Little Forks office in Midland (125 McDonald St\, 2nd floor). If you would like to join us for ID Night\, please send and email to ecianek@littleforks.org \nLearn more about stream sampling at https://www.littleforks.org/stream-sampling.html \nRegister for the event HERE.
