SUMMARY:Kalamazoo Parks Beautification 2025
DESCRIPTION:This spring we are launching the beginning of our Kalamazoo Riverside Parks Beautification Project. This is a build from last year’s Kalamazoo River and River Valley Trail Cleanup events where hundreds of volunteers cleared thousands of pounds of litter\, trash\, and other unwanted debris\, from our Kalamazoo River and adjoining greenways. \nOur focus will be making improvements to our flagship Mayors’ Riverfront and Verburg parks. Work will include the clearing of litter and trash\, eradicating invasive trees and bushes\, creating generous river overlooks\, and plating of native trees\, bushes\, and grasses to beautify the landscape. \nThis riverside parks beautification project is a collaboration between Michigan Waterways Stewards\, Kalamazoo Parks and Recreation\, and Barry\, Calhoun\, Kalamazoo Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area. This high-impact\, community-wide\, volunteer resourced event\, will change the landscape of Mayors’ Riverfront and Verburg Parks. \nIt includes two 2025 seasonal projects. The work will result in the greater integration of the Kalamazoo Valley River Trail with the Kalamazoo River. We will be creating improved sight lines\, river overlooks\, and improve biodiversity via the planting of native trees\, bushes\, and grasses. The later will create a more resilient landscape and restore the food web to attract and maintain wildlife and essential pollinators such as bees\, butterflies\, and beetles. \nThe first event is slated for this spring\, the weekend of April 12 and 13. Another this fall\, on a date not yet determined\, which will include reforestation in the form of an Adopt A Tree program. \nSPRING 2025 – APRIL 12 & 13 10AM – 3PM\n•  Eradicate invasive trees\, bushes and other unwanted flora. Those identified include: Buckthorn\, Tree of Heaven… Privet\, Honeysuckle\, and Autumn Olive\n•  Create generous sight lines to integrate the Kalamazoo River with Kalamazoo River Valley Trail.\n•  Create Kalamazoo River overlooks to improve the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail experience. \nFill out the form on the event page to register to volunteer or to become an event sponsor.

SUMMARY:Clean Waters Challenge 2024 - Healing the Bear
DESCRIPTION:The Clean Waters Challenge: Healing the Bear Bear River Cleanup will take place along the Bear River in Emmet and Charlevoix counties on September 7. The Bear River is a tributary of Little Traverse Bay and stretches 15 miles from its headwaters in Walloon village to its mouth at the Petoskey waterfront. On any given day\, canoers\, kayakers\, hikers\, and fishermen enjoy the beauty of this fast-paced river. It is the goal of the cleanup to maintain the ecological and aesthetic integrity of the Bear River by involving the community in keeping it clean and healthy. All dead and downed woody debris will be left in its place\, and trash and recyclables will be removed by the volunteers. The recyclables are then sorted out during the cleanup and taken to the Emmet County Transfer Station for proper disposal. These recyclables include any electronics\, appliances\, tin\, cardboard\, glass\, paper\, plastic\, scrap metal\, tires\, wood and other products that are in good enough condition to be recycled. All other items will be properly disposed of to keep them out of our waters. \nAll ages are welcome\, but youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. \nJoin the fun and help us “Heal the Bear.” \n9 – 9:30 a.m. Registration (breakfast items provided by Grain Train Natural Foods Market)\n9:30 a.m. Kick-Off & instructions\n9:45 a.m. – 12 p.m. Cleanup & trash sorting\n12 – 1 p.m. BBQ lunch (hotdogs\, hamburgers\, chips\, cookies\, refreshments)\nVolunteers can enter to win great prizes from Bearcub Outfitters! \nVolunteers can register as a group or individually. Individual volunteers will be teamed up in groups of 4 or more and assigned to a section of the Bear River. Maps\, directions\, and collection sites will be handed out at registration. If you are registering as a group\, please indicate your group name(s) on the registration form so we can keep your team together. \nNew this year! Thanks to our sponsor Petoskey Plastics\, volunteers will receive a collectable iron-on embroidered patch that will be designed each year for the Clean Waters Challenge. \nRegistration Location:\nBear River Shelter: Located in the Bear River Valley Recreation Area near the Quaintance Avenue entrance and the Mitchell Street Bridge.\nRestrooms are available onsite at the Bear River Shelter. \nParking:\nParking is available at the Bear River Valley Recreation Area\, street parking\, and across the street at the Bayfront. \nWhat is provided:\nBuckets\, trash bags\, grabbers\, disposable gloves\, and other necessities will be provided. \nWhat to bring:\nVolunteers may bring their own buckets\, gardening gloves\, or other collection materials. Bug spray\, sunscreen\, sunhat\, reusable water bottle\, and other self-care items recommended. \nWhat to wear:\nOutdoor clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Tall socks or pants\, outdoor shoes\, hat\, layered clothing appropriate for changing temperatures and weather. Gardening or work gloves recommended. Volunteers generally stay on the shore or edge of the water\, but some may choose to put on waders provided by the Watershed Council for collection in ankle or knee deep water under supervision of a staff member. \nWhat to expect:\nAt registration\, volunteers will be assigned to a small group with a team leader—generally a staff member or experienced volunteer. Each team will be assigned a section of the Bear River\, highlighted on a map provided at registration. After the kick-off at 9:30 a.m.\, volunteers will walk to their assigned section. For sections further away from the registration area\, volunteers may choose to drive to their assigned section. Trash may be bagged and left at each site for pick-up by Watershed Council staff or carried back to the picnic shelter for sorting and disposal. Breakfast items (granola bars\, bananas\, coffee\, etc.) will be available in the morning and a BBQ lunch will be provided at noon. \nWeather considerations:\nThis event is “light rain or shine” but will be cancelled a minimum of 24 hours in advance for heavy rains or thunderstorms. Volunteers will be notified via email and social media. \nWater access\, mobility & safety:\nThe cleanup takes place along the Bear River\, which can have sections of fast-moving waters. Volunteers will be working mostly along the shore. Volunteers may encounter stone stairs\, slopes\, steep areas\, and uneven ground as they collect trash.  Some volunteers may enter the water with appropriate equipment such as waders\, or in a canoe\, to reach trash in deeper parts of the river. Volunteers are asked to stay on or near the shore unless otherwise directed and trained by the Watershed Council staff. All youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

SUMMARY:11th Annual Buck Creek Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Team up with Friends of Buck Creek for their 11th Annual Buck Creek Clean Up on Saturday\, August 24th! \nA clean and healthy environment is critical to the overall health of our waterways and communities. Removing trash and debris from our environment becomes increasingly difficult and expensive the farther it gets from its source. Taking action to remove trash within your community will ensure a swimmable\, drinkable\, and fishable future for the waters we all share. This clean up is a family-friendly\, active event where volunteers will be walking and exercising as they make a positive impact upon the Buck Creek Watershed. Your participation is greatly appreciated! \nIf you are interested in being a sponsor of this year’s clean up\, send us an email at mibuckcreek@gmail.com. \nTo register\, visit https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdasYM9eDvxmWsuY735Hbu-OSZffrkYYSah_nJIDTK4XOGojw/viewform. \n  \nEVENT HISTORY \nIn 2014\, Schrems Trout Unlimited\, in conjunction with local municipalities\, was awarded a grant to assess the water quality in the Buck Creek watershed. Currently\, Buck Creek is a cold water resource that continues to be highly threatened because of its urban location. It is rare to find cold water in an urban setting\, which is why Friends of Buck Creek and Schrems TU\, as well as others like the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds\, have highlighted Buck Creek as a threatened stream in need of protection. However\, th grant that was received from the Department of Environment\, Great Lakes\, and Energy doesn’t allow for funds to be used for a clean up\, which is why Schrems Trout Unlimited and Friends of Buck Creek\, in conjunction with the cities of Kentwood\, Grandville\, Wyoming\, as well as our generous sponsors have continued to host this clean up.
