SUMMARY:The Fish Thief: A Great Lakes Mystery
DESCRIPTION:FREE EVENT!  GREAT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!\n6:30 pm:  Come early to see and touch live sea lamprey before the movie!!!\nPick up brochures and fun goodies about lamprey and their control.  (Courtesy of Hammond Bay Biological Station)\n7:00 pm:  The Fish Thief movie\, followed by questions and answers with researchers from Hammond Bay Biological Station. \nFilm is 90 minutes long. \nSponsored by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission\, the Black Lake Association\, and Friends of the Onaway Library. Don’t miss The Fish Thief: A Great Lakes Mystery\, a gripping documentary about the destructive effect of the invasive sea lamprey that nearly destroyed the Great Lakes fishery. \nCome early to see the live sea lamprey\, watch the movie\, and stay to have all your questions about these invasive predators answered. \n\n\n\nThe Fish Thief\, produced by SkyhoundMedia and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission\, and narrated by Oscar winning actor J.K. Simmons\, tells the dramatic story of the sea lampreys’ invasion in the 20th century and the ongoing efforts to control and repair the damage done. These predators created an environmental crisis that almost completely wiped out lake trout\, whitefish\, and other key fish populations. The heavy destruction to the fishery destroyed jobs and businesses. It threatened local industries\, small town economies\, and indigenous populations in the United States and Canada. Natural resources and recreational fishing were permanently jeopardized. \n\n\n\nThe riveting story of the extraordinary cooperative efforts of international scientists\, policy makers\, and conservationists to save the Great Lakes is at the heart of the film. The fight to control the sea lamprey population and to repair\, restore\, and manage critical natural resources still requires massive ongoing effort. For those reasons alone\, you’ll want to see it. \n\n\n\nLocally\, The Fish Thief holds great personal interest because it takes place here. Places that you know well\, such as the Ocqueoc River and Falls\, Bells Fishery in Cheboygan\, and the historical Hammond Bay Biological Station\, for example\, are featured. People that you remember appear in images from the past. \nThe Fish Thief is 90 minutes long and will be followed by a brief question and answer session with Roger Bergstedt\, a retired research fishery biologist specializing in lamprey research for 25 years at the Hammond Bay Biological Station\, and Scott Miehls\, a current Hammond Bay biologist with a contemporary perspective of cutting-edge sea lamprey control methods. \nTo watch the trailer and for more information about the film\, see www.thefishthief.com

SUMMARY:Uncovering the Mystery of Our Hidden Waterways
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening:    LOST RIVERS\nwith short documentary FRESHWATER\nIn honor of World Water Day\, Dr. Jacob Napieralski\, Ph.D.\, Dr. Marie Garcia\, Ph.D.\, and Landscape Architect Nancy Darga\, will lead a discussion and a post screening Q&A session about the importance of preserving our waterways and bringing awareness to the “lost rivers” that exist in our community. \nFeatured Speakers:\nDr. Jacob Napieralski\, Ph.D.\nDr. Marie Garcia\, Ph.D.\nNancy Darga\, Landscape Architect\nLost Rivers Synopsis: \n\nAs climate changes forces us to reconsider the relationship between the built environment and our natural resources\, LOST RIVERS brings to life an aspect of urban ecology that has long been kept secret. \n\n\nNearly every major city was built near the convergence of many rivers. As cities grew with the Industrial Revolution\, these rivers became conduits for disease and pollution. The 19th-century solution was to bury them underground and merge them with the sewer systems. These rivers still run through today’s metropolises\, but they do so out of sight. \nLOST RIVERS examines hidden waterways in cities around the world and introduces us to people dedicated to exploring and exposing them. In Montreal\, urban explorer Danielle Plamondon and photographer Andrew Emond follow the stony underground tunnels that contain the Riviere Saint-Pierre. In Bresica\, Italy\, a group of urban explorers conduct popular\, officially-sanctioned tours through the city’s network of medieval rivers. \nMore and more municipal governments are recognizing the wisdom of these explorers and making their once-buried waterways more accessible. Drawing inspiration from Seoul\, whose Cheonggyecheon River was opened to the public in the early 2000s after 40 years of being hidden beneath a highway\, Yonkers\, New York has committed itself to “daylighting” its Saw Mill River\, which has been buried under the city’s downtown for the past 90 years. In London and Toronto\, planners are rethinking the way they manage their rivers for environmental reasons\, responding to structural problems that have to increasingly frequent flooding and sewer overflows. \n\nVisit Science on Screen to learn more! \n  \n  \n  \n
