DESCRIPTION:Join the Michigan Department of Environment\, Great Lakes\, and Energy (EGLE) for the third annual MI Healthy Climate Conference on April 22-23\, 2025\, at the Huntington Place in Detroit! \nAbout the Conference \nGovernor Whitmer committed Michigan to carbon neutrality by 2050 and in April 2022 released the MI Healthy Climate Plan (the Plan) to chart Michigan’s path forward. We are dedicated to reaching our interim 2030 goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 52% from 2005 baselines in an equitable manner. While we tackle this challenge with great urgency\, we also find hope and inspiration in the collective community taking climate action in Michigan. The Plan builds off the leadership of tribal communities and cities and towns across Michigan\, in addition to the private sector. \nAs we continue working together toward a carbon neutral Michigan\, EGLE is hosting this one-and-a-half-day MI Healthy Climate Conference to report on the progress of the Plan\, build connections and empower collaboration\, leverage resources and mobilize opportunities\, and prioritize our next steps towards reaching the goals of the Plan. DESCRIPTION:MICHIGAN CHAPTER Soil and Water Conservation Society (SWCS) \nSUSTAINABLE INTENSIFICATION OF THE\nRURAL LANDSCAPE: \nProtecting Soil Health\, Water Quality\nand Farm Profitability \nMichigan’s physical geography consists of diverse landscapes surrounded by the Great Lakes. These landscapes include complex rural\, urban\, and riparian environmental systems integrating a multitude of land uses; all supported by soil and its complex physical\, chemical\, and biological components. Management of these soils involves both supporting human needs for production and the environmental needs to support and protect the ecosystem. Many agricultural producers seek to manage their systems guided by agroecological principles whereby soil health and ecological services accumulate in mutually supportive ways. They are actively involved in devising\, testing\, and evaluating new and innovative practices on their farms to enhance biodiversity and beneficial interactions while improving resilience and mitigating risk. Urban land users also have important roles in ecosystem protection. He holds a BA degree in Geological Sciences and a MA degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also has a PhD in Teaching and Curriculum (Science Education) from Syracuse University. Broadly\, his research focuses on how engaging elementary youth of Color in participatory science learning influences their multiple identities within urban schools and promotes their activism within communities. His work utilizes qualitative methodologies to center youth’s voices as they engage in science learning to make sense of how they come to view themselves as scientists while also contending with their other identities as racialized students within their classroom spaces. Additional areas of his research explore how teacher education programs pursue racial equity through a networked improvement community. Prior to joining the faculty at Michigan State University\, Burgess was a secondary science teacher in Durham\, NC. \nStefanie Marshall\, Ph.D.\nDr. Marshall is an Assistant Professor of Science Education at Michigan State University. Her research engages organizational and system-level questions that take up how policies and decisions about science and STEM education impact the science and STEM experiences of marginalized youth. Dr. Marshall taught middle and high school science in Cincinnati\, OH\, and served as a district manager of federal programming across the state of Michigan. Dr. Marshall is the recipient of the Google Computer Science Education Research grant for a research project entitled Do Computer Science Heroes Wear CAPEs? An Analysis of State Policy Infrastructures Designed to Support Equity-Focused Computer Science Education. Dr. Marshall’s research has been published in various journals including the Journal of Research in Science Teaching\, Science Education\, Journal of Educational Administration\, Cultural Studies in Science Education\, and others. SUMMARY:Wildflower Association of Michigan Conference
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 38 years\, the Wildflower Association of Michigan (WAM) has presented the annual Michigan Native Plant Conference at the Kellogg Convention Center in East Lansing Michigan. This conference has presented timely\, actionable\, and fascinating information about native plants\, habitats\, landscape design\, wildlife\, invasive controls\, and much more.  Our 2025 conference will continue in that vein with the theme “If You Plant It\, They Will Come.” Our presenters will focus on the role native plants play in establishing and supporting biodiversity in our world. \nThis year\, we are offering two days of learning and fun.  On Saturday\, March 1\, we are holding a hands-on seminar titled “How and Why Natives – Getting Started “. This two-hour program will give those new to the native plant movement practical knowledge and insights on how to establish native plants on their properties. It will be run by two very experienced and knowledgeable people who will present techniques and answer questions. This seminar runs from 2 to 4 pm and is free with conference registration. Click here for details. Space is limited so sign up early. \nAfter the seminar\, we will present a Poster Session which is a presentation of current research into the native plant field by university students\, conservation districts\, and WAM Grant winners. Not only is it a wonderful opportunity to learn the newest thinking in the field\, but it will also provide networking opportunities. The Poster Session is open to everyone and runs from 6 to 8 pm on Saturday\, March 1. Appetizers and a cash bar will be available. \nOn Sunday\, March 2\, our Michigan Native Plant Conference will begin. We will offer a light breakfast starting at 8:00 am. Our keynote speaker will begin at 9:00 am followed by breakout sessions so attendees can select the session most interesting to them. Of course\, a delicious lunch will be served and there will be an array of vendors selling artwork\, jewelry\, books\, and more. During lunch\, we will present the WAM Grant winners. These are non-profit organizations that will be using funds from our generous members and donors to create\, install\, and maintain native plant gardens throughout the state. We will also learn about a particularly insidious invasive plant called Lesser Celandine by the WAM president\, Caroline Miller. \nOur last event is the Annual WAM Board meeting. Plan to drop by and meet the board members and learn how the WAM organization is run. We value ideas and suggestions from our members. \nTo encourage year-long learning all registrants will receive invitations to watch three webinars featuring professional presentations on the relationships between native plant ecosystems and the enhanced biodiversity they provide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConference Pricing\nWe offer three levels of pricing. He is an ecologist and naturalist covering broad topics from non-game fish and mussels to landscape management. His focus is fostering undergraduate student engagement through field experiences both on campus and in the local community to solve local environmental issues. He works to employ inquiry and project-based learning through informal classroom environments to maximize the student’s experience. \nHe will present Plants\, People\, and Perseverance: Incorporating Native Plantings in Urban Environments – Greening Toledo Through Service.  Greening Toledo Through Service (GUTS) is a student-led project that works to increase native plantings on the Main Campus of the University of Toledo. Student employees convert turf to prairie\, implement formal garden projects\, and support these efforts through greenhouse cultivation of plant material. Much of the work is facilitated through service-learning opportunities where students experience real-life applications of what they have covered in class. In 2022-2024\, GUTS facilitated 1000 student volunteer hours (600 for credit\, 400 completely voluntary each year) to grow and plant ~20\,000 native plant plugs.
